My mother Joan and I started Goodsman Letting in Henfield in 1992. We began in Jasmine House, above Jasmine’s florists and Video Box, when these were Greenfield’s greengrocers and a butchers. We rented two offices from planning consultant Michael Cox and stayed until 1996.
As our business increased and we needed an extra member of staff, we moved to Brook House in the High Street, which is now Taste Deli. Kay Boxall joined us then and is still with us 16 years later! We were very happy in our Brook House office, but in 2003, my sister Carol Goodsman started a discount designer clothes shop, Alice Carroll, and needed a High Street location. As there were no other letting agents in Henfield at that time and we were by then well established, we swapped with her and moved to her premises at Vinalls Business Centre in Nep Town Road.
In 2006, Joan retired to go to live with her brother in Florida, and Ginny Jesson joined the staff. Ginny is still here, so hopefully we are doing something right and this is a happy place to work. The business continued to go from strength to strength, but the economic circumstances of the last few years have brought many estate agents into the lettings market, so we felt we needed to be more visible and started to keep an eye out for another office in the village centre.
In the summer of 2010, we noticed Edward Jones moving out from our current offices in Coopers Way and made immediate enquiries. We moved here in September 2010. Joan has returned from America and now works on Saturday mornings. I think our current offices are the nicest we have had and we hope to be here for many years to come.
I shall reach a milestone birthday next year, when Goodsman Letting is 21, so we should really celebrate, if I am not feeling too depressed about my age!
