A couple wrote to the Hub from Christchurch in New Zealand.

Many years ago Mr Sutherland bought a photograph album from a second hand shop in Christchurch which is full of photos of Henfield and the surrounding area, dated 1919.

There is mention of a Miss C Singleton and a Mrs Foster from Henfield among other scenic photos. The inscription on the inside cover says, "To Dear Han, wishing you the best of luck for your future, With Love From Gwen and Alice".

Mr and Mrs Sutherland were taken with the personal nature of the photos and inscriptions and wanted to return it to Henfield and possibly the descendants of the people mentioned.

We publicised the story on the Hub and the good news is that Alan Barwick at the Henfield Museum has offered to give the album a good home. Moreover, local resident Nicola McGregor, who has relatives living in Christchurch, has offered help to bring it safely back. Another reader has found that one of the ladies pictured in the album - Mrs Foster - was a wife and mother living on the Common at the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The album is delicate and will need very careful handling but we are hoping that before long you'll be able to see it in the museum.

If you have any further information about the album please email info@henfieldhub.com
