From our home tucked in the South Downs at Poynings, we continue this tradition, putting the principles of variety, affordability, local sourcing and a sense of community at the heart of what we do.
From small beginnings
Rushfields began in 1984 when brother and sister Colin and Kathryn Langridge (above) established a small, no-nonsense plant nursery on a greenfield site near Poynings in Sussex. Back then, our business centred on growing bedding plants and vegetables in polythene tunnels.
Our founding pair were soon joined as directors by Colin’s wife Pam and Kathryn’s husband, Adrian Hillman (below). As time went on, word got around, and the demand for our plants and for us to stock other products grew quickly, even taking us a little by surprise.
During the 1990s, we built several glasshouses to nurture our growing array of plants. However, as the need to expand increased further, it wasn’t long before we replaced these with a spacious new retail glasshouse. Opened in 1999, this became home to our shop and our popular Rushfields Café.
In the 2000s, we extended our sales area to provide space for thousands of home-grown roses before adding our acclaimed Food Shop in 2010.
We hold true to our aim of supporting local businesses, farmers and artisanal producers while providing fabulous quality, variety, traceability, affordability and service to our customers, every day, every season.
Central to our thinking is our emphasis on things local. We believe in carving a place for ourselves in the heart of the South Downs community, so helping us to reduce food miles, support the Sussex economy, and source and provide the best quality local goods and fresh produce.
