St Barnabas House has a brand new retail volunteering role for 2015.

With 11 charity shops across Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield, an array of volunteers are needed to help run the shops.

The new shop supervisor post has been introduced to ensure the shops can remain open and trading if a manager is not present.

Julie Angell is one of the volunteers who took up the new role of shop supervisor at the Henfield shop.

She said: “I had previous retail experience, and my friend volunteers at the shop, so encouraged me to volunteer, too.

“Volunteering gives you a taster of retail in a really lovely environment – our shops have so many wonderful items for sale, and the customers really care about supporting St Barnabas House, and that creates a nice atmosphere as we all want the same thing.”

Julie was asked to become a Volunteer Supervisor for the shop, and covers when the Manager or Assistant Manager are on leave.

She said: “It’s nice to have the responsibility and feel important and useful. The supervisor role is incredibly important as it means the shop can remain open if there was unexpected absence, or when people are on holiday.

“It would be a fantastic opportunity for someone to develop their skills in retail and help further their career.”

Shop supervisor volunteers are given full training and will be responsible for running the shop when the manager is away. Duties include holding keys, cashing up and banking and looking after the volunteers in the shop as well as keeping customers happy and ensuring the stock is replenished through the day.

If you are looking to gain retail experience, we also have other shop volunteer roles available across East and West Sussex. From window dressing and sorting stock to cashing up, there are plenty of duties and tasks to keep you busy.

So what’s the next step? You can pop into one of our shops or our Retail Distribution Centre in Worthing to find out more. Or you can contact our Voluntary Services Team by phone on 01903 706315 or email and we will send you an application pack.
