Dear Parents/Carers,

St. Peter’s has been enjoying a sporty few weeks, whether in friendly competition with our locality schools or more competitive matches and tournaments with schools in outer areas.  Please do have a look at the sports reports to see what we have been up to. Can I also say a big thank you to all the Parents/carers who kindly offer to help with driving the children to any event, not just sporting, that St. Peter’s is involved with.  It wouldn’t be possible for us to attend these occasions without your invaluable help.

Comic Relief - As part of fundraising for Comic Relief next Friday, red noses will be on sale from Monday for the usual price of £1. Y6 will be on the playground at break times throughout the week, should your child wish to buy one. On the day, children are invited to come to school in something ‘funny’ or red.  Football kits are not allowed.  Y6 will also be by the gates on the morning to collect any donation you would like to make. If your child is involved in any fundraising outside of school, it would be great to be able to put pictures on our website so please do take a photograph during the activity and drop it in to the school office.

Y3 Football - On Friday 3rd March a small group of Y3 boys played in our first football tournament in Horsham Park, run by Horsham District Council's Sports Development team alongside some enthusiastic students from Collyers. The boys played extremely well despite horrific pitch conditions. With no natural goalie, the boys only conceded one goal over the seven matches with some particularly amazing saves. We became runners up in the tournament only being pipped from first place by an extremely strong Southwater A side, who we incidentally drew 0-0 with. Southwater didn't concede any goals which left them with 33 points and St Peter's with 31. Well done to all the boys who played; they barely had time to breath let alone grab a drink between games.

Y4 Football - Last Friday it was the Y4’s turn. Again our children showed their skills, courage and talent by playing some fantastic football. We played four games, winning 2-0, 11-0, 10-0 and drawing one game with Leechpool 0-0. This draw saw the team joint top of the leader board in our group but due to the significant goal difference, we went through to the final to play Shelley Primary. By half time we were 1-0 down but after a nail biting second half, managed to get that elusive goal to bring us to a 1-1 draw. Despite both schools agreeing to a joint win, in football things are never that easy and so like the England football team, the boys took up their positions at the penalty line. Unfortunately the final score saw us lose 2-1 (at least we kept in-line with our national squad!) but despite the gut wrenching finish and natural devastation felt by the boys, they were all extremely gracious in their defeat cheering an obviously ecstatic Shelley team. A massive congratulations to all the team, they all played amazingly with some great goals, fantastic assists and superb defending. A huge thank you to our goalie, Harry, for stepping in to cover sickness Friday morning. Despite not having to do a great deal of keeping until the last game, he remained focused and alert throughout. Congratulations boys on coming runners up.

Y3 Benchball - On Monday 13th March we hosted our first ever Y3 benchball competition against Jolesfield and Upper Beeding.  It was a beautiful day and the children all played with great determination and demonstrated some fantastic ball skills.  We won both of our games and finished as the winners!  Well done to all the children that took part.

Y5/6 Football - In the Autumn term our Y5/6 Football team qualified for the Area Partnership Football Finals held on Wednesday 15th March at Littlehampton Academy. 12 schools participated from across the region playing on Astro and 3G pitches. The team was hungry for success, insisting on wearing our somewhat dishevelled and slightly small orange kit for luck. The competition was extremely tough, leading us to draw 2 games 0-0, win 2 games and lose our last game 3-0 against a strong Buckingham Park team. This left us in 3rd position within our group and playing for 5th or 6th. After some great "swooping in" and "floating" of the ball, the elusive goal just didn't come and at the final whistle the score remained 0-0, both teams taking joint 5th. This left us way above both Steyning teams, with whom we have a friendly rivalry. Man of the Match went to Adam for his terrific reading of all the games and ability to be in the right place when needed most. His determination and resilience in the last game really shone through, keeping us to a goalless draw. We know the boys were disappointed with the end result but they all played amazingly and should be extremely proud of themselves.

Netball Winners!

The netball team took part in their last tournament last night and finished as overall winners of our locality.  This means we retained the title we gained last year and go on to represent the area at the partnership finals.  Huge congratulations to all of the children who played in any of the three tournaments - a well deserved win.
