The charges, which took effect from 1 October 2016, apply to non-household waste such as soil, hard-core, DIY materials and plasterboard taken to council waste disposal sites.

The charge is £4 a bag/sheet (a standard rubble sack of 45l /20-25 kg) and £4 for car and vans tyres.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “As a council we have to make savings, due to a shortfall in Government funding, and this decision is the best option we have to make the £2 million a year savings needed.

Other changes being made by the council include:

  • Changing the daily opening hours at all sites to 10am to 7pm, five days a week in summer and 10am to 5pm in winter
  • Reducng the number of days 8 of the Household Waste Recycling Sites open each week – but all will be open weekends. (excluding three sites).
